digital technologies

DigiTech

At Scoresby Primary School we believe that the use of digital technologies can improve teaching and learning by motivating students with engaging, interactive and fun learning environments.  It offers new avenues for meaningful communication and collaboration between teachers and students and provides students with the additional tools to develop their creativity, design thinking and become critical users technology in an ever-changing world.

We provide our students with the tools to transform their learning and to enrich their learning environment. The knowledge, skills and behaviours that we aim to develop in our students are to:

The Digital Technologies curriculum enables students to become confident and creative developers of digital solutions through the application of information systems and specific ways of thinking about problem solving.

Students acquire a deep knowledge and understanding of digital systems, data and information and the processes associated with creating digital solutions so they can take up an active role in meeting current and future needs.

The teaching of Digital Technologies at Scoresby Primary School is completed in two main ways.  The first is through the general classroom environment where the use of digital technologies is integrated into the everyday day classroom as a tool for learning.  All students having access to shared iPads and laptops across the school.  The second is through a specialist subject focusing on developing the skills of coding and robotics.

Digital Technologies - agreed acceptable use policy

As an accredited eSmart school we take the time to work with our students to understand the importance of being safe and respectful online. We ensure that our students have the tools to manage issues with bullying and cyber incidents to ensure that the student fell safer and more supported at school and online.  This learning is supported by our Digital Teaching and Learning policy. We ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of digital learning through regular reviews of our curriculum, our digital policies and safety practices.

We use Digital Technologies Agreed Acceptable Use policies for F- 2 and 3-6. These agreements are sent home at the beginning of each year, after being discussed with students in the classroom, to be reviewed with parents.

Students and parents are then expected to sign that they agree with the Acceptable Use Policy and will abide by it.  The Acceptable Use Policy is to remain at home however the signature sheet is to be returned to school.

coding and robotics

Coding is an important skill for every child to learn as it:

  1. teaches students how to be logical thinkers and problem solvers
  2. Builds confidence and social skills as they learn to code
  3. Expands creativity
  4. Improves academic skills; and is a
  5. Beneficial skill for the future.

At Scoresby Primary School we use Minecraft for Education, Scratch and Scratch jnr, and code.org to help our students develop their coding skills:

These programs use visual blocks to represent programming concepts and terminology such as procedures, loops and conditional instructions.

Robotics

A natural extension of coding is the use of robotics. A robot is a mechanical device that can be programmed to follow a set of instructions. Robots have processing units, sensors to help them perceive things in the surrounding environment and motors and actuators so that they can move. Robots also have the added programmable functionality of lights, sounds and speech recognition. Our Robotics Program is expanded in complexity as children progress through school.
