Student Leaders

“Leadership simply begins with the courage to be yourself, so everyone else can be, too.”

UMAR HAGUE

The opportunity for young people to take on leadership roles in a school environment allows them the scope to take risks with their leadership in a safe and supported environment amongst their teachers and peers.

At Scoresby Primary School we strongly advocate for student leadership opportunities and for the value of student voice, we therefore aim to provide many opportunities for formal and informal leadership positions for our students

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC)

The Student Representative Council (SRC) is comprised of students from Year 3-6. The students of the SRC have the opportunity to become involved student leaders and to make decisions on behalf of our students at Scoresby PS. Two SRC members are chosen at the beginning of each year from each 3-6 class to represent their peers.

The SRC hold meetings every term where discussions are held and decisions are made on fundraising events for our school, support of our local community and to plan for exciting and fun days where all our students can get involved.

Throughout the year, the SRC are taught leadership skills such as enhancing their communication with students and teachers, decision making, working alongside our local community and surveying their peers to ensure all students’ ideas and concerns are being heard and addressed.

peer mediators

Peer Mediation is a new program that will be introduced to Scoresby Primary School in 2022. Peer Mediation is when students help other students to find a way of solving problems, fights or arguments. The students who are having the problem meet with two trained mediators to say what the problem is for them and how they feel about it. The mediators then help them to pick out what they each need for the problem to be solved. A solution which meets each person’s needs is chosen and an agreement is written down.

It is a voluntary and confidential process bound by specific ground rules. It follows a 6 step formula that assists students to work through immediate problems, take responsibility for generating their own solutions, agree on those that are practical and acceptable to both students and then work at implementing these. In doing so it enables children to develop a basis for future problem solving.

Students take part in a whole day training session learning skills such as being active listeners, ways to solve conflict, communication skills and team work. They also participate in role plays to practise how to mediate a problem.

SUSTAINABLES

The Sustainables are a group of students from Years 3 – 6 who are selected by their peers. The Sustainables play an important role at Scoresby Primary School. They promote recycling practices within the school and look after our school chickens and kitchen garden.

DIGITECH LEADERS

Our ICT Leaders are leaders within their own classroom. Each class from Year 1 – 6 selects a student to be their ICT Captain within their classroom. Their duties and responsibilities can include:

“Believe you can - and you are halfway there!”

THEODORE ROOSEVELT

Scoresby Primary provides many opportunities for young learners to develop their leadership capabilities throughout their primary school years and we encourage our emerging leaders to step up and apply for these positions.
