MiniLit

MiniLit - Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy - is an evidence-based, explicit and effective early literacy intervention program that addresses gaps in students’ learning of alphabet sounds, common words and reading accuracy. MiniLit provides intensive learning support in reading to students in Year 1 or 2 where teachers have identified this need.

MiniLit is an integrated and balanced program of 80 carefully structured lessons. Sessions start with the basics of letter/sound knowledge and decoding of simple words and progress to extending word attack knowledge using common digraphs and longer words.

Each lesson comprises three main components - sounds and words activities, text reading and story book reading – which cover the literacy elements of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.

Students who are selected to participate in the MiniLit program are withdrawn from class four times per week for a 1-hour lesson, in a group of four, working with the MiniLit Instructor.
